How does the application process work?

Step 1:

The first step in the application process is to fill out a “Preliminary Application for Public Housing” and submit it to the office. You can obtain an application by calling the office, coming to the office or printing it from this website.

Step 2:

When there is an upcoming vacancy the next applicant on the proper waiting list is contacted. If the applicant is interested in proceeding, a primary application is either mailed or picked up by the applicant and at that time a screening interview is scheduled.

Step 3:

The Canton Housing Authority (CHA) uses the information given in the preliminary application to determine eligibility. Eligible applicants are added to the appropriate waiting list in order of date and time of submission. Being added to the waiting list is not approval for housing; it means the applicant qualifies to be on the waiting list.

Step 4:

Once the interview is complete there will be a period of time in which the CHA staff verifies income, interviews former landlords and completes criminal background checks.

Step 5:

The file is then reviewed and the applicant is either approved or denied. Approved applicants are then offered the available apartment and if they accept; a lease signing & move-in inspection are scheduled.

The day the lease is signed, the tenant(s) can take occupancy of the apartment.

Is there a waiting list for housing?

Yes, we work from waiting lists. The length of your wait depends on factors such as family composition and vacancy rate.

At least once a year we purge our lists and essentially poll our applicants to see if they are still interested in housing with us. This purge shortens wait time also. It is VERY important that all eligible applicants who have been added to our wait lists keep us updated as to any changes in contact information or changes in household composition.

How much will my rent be?

Rent is based on 30% of the adjusted household gross income (less a utility allowance for those buildings where payment of utilities is not included).

Are any preferences given for waitlist placement?

Preference is given to applicants who live or work in Canton, reside in St.Lawrence County or are elderly or disabled (18 and older).

Is a security deposit required? How much will it be?

A security deposit is required. The amount of the security deposit is equal to the greater of 30% of adjusted household gross income, or $50.

I have an emergency housing situation; do you have an apartment for me?

Due to our policies and regulations, we can not accommodate emergency housing situations. We must abide by our wait lists.

Will I be required to sign a lease?

Yes, all members of a household 18 years or older must sign the lease.
